Report on an experiment on the impact of flashing green traffic lights on the quality of transport service and traffic safety on the territory of Sofia Municipality
In order to investigate the effect of introducing flashing green lights at traffic lights, a practical experiment has been carried out with the assistance of the Traffic Management and Analysis Directorate of Sofia Municipality and the Transport Policies European Center.
The experiment was conducted at the crossroad of Botevgradsko Shose Blvd. and Vitinya St. on the territory of Sofia Municipality in two stages.
The first stage of the experiment was conducted in the period 28.11.2022. – 12.12.2022г.
The second stage of the experiment was conducted in the period 04.01.2023. – 18.01.2023
The main questions the experiment aims to answer are:
- How the flashing green light influences drivers’ decision-making behaviour and subsequent action to stop or pass the crossroad
- Does it improve traffic safety within the range of the crossroad
- Does it encourage early stopping by drivers
- How does it affect traffic accident data (red light running) within the range of light controlled crossroads
